Charles and Camilla Visit Kentucky
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have completed their visit to the United States by spending the day in Louisville, Kentucky.
Charles and Camilla were welcomed to the state by Kentucky’s Governor, Steve Beshear, at Louisville International Airport before they headed over to the Centre for African American Heritage, where the River City Drum Corp entertained the visitors and crowds upon arrival. The couple participated in a culture festival at the centre, enjoying performances and exhibitions on local heritage, and were presented with a letter from Louisville native Muhammad Ali.
“Louisville prides itself on being a compassionate city and we are confident that you will leave feeling a sense of our southern hospitality…we hope you know how much this city respects and admires the many contributions you have made in the world,” the letter read.
After the centre, it was separate agendas for the couple for the remainder of the day, both attending engagements related to their key causes.
Prince Charles headed over to Old Louisville, where he attended a meeting at the Filson Historical Society that honoured the work the City of Louisville has done to preserve their history. Then, alongside the Mayor of Loiusville, Greg Fischer, he visited the city’s Big Four Bridge. The Prince’s final engagement was a roundtable meeting at the Church of Assumption organised by the Centre for Interfaith Relations. Charles delivered a speech to the attendees discussing the relationship between health and the environment.
The Duchess of Cornwall meanwhile visited a settlement house, a farm and a racecourse. During her visit to Neighbourhood House, which was established in 1896, she read stories to children (one 11-year-old called her “cool”) and played bingo with some of the older citizens who make use of the community centre. It was then on to Oxmoor Farm where Camilla was told about the farm’s food literacy program for students. She helped children who participate in the ‘field to fork’ program plant rhubarbs before sitting with them to make pizzas with ingredients grown at the farm.
Her final engagement was at Churchill Downs to officially launch the American arm of The Brooke, an organisation that is “dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules in some of the world’s poorest communities” of which she is President. Here she meet a few donkeys and horses before the official party when indoors for afternoon tea.
