Queen Maxima Opens the “Máximakanaal”
Today, Thursday March 5, Queen Maxima officially opened the “Máximakanaal” in Den Bosch, North Brabant.
At the ceremony were present Ton Rombouts, the Mayor of Den Bosch, Melanie Schultz van Haegen, the Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, and Jannita Robberse, Chief Engineer and Director of Public Works.
The “Maxima Channel” is a new waterway, is 9 km long and connects the South Willemsvaart Canal and Meuse river together. The new channel improves the accessibility of Brabant and the quality of the environment because large containers will be transported by water instead of by road.
Several hundred people were present, including many primary and elementary school children. The official opening of the channel was marked by a cannon shot. Then Queen Maxima made a boat trip on the new channel.
In the southern Netherlands, there are other channels that are named after Queens, they are: the Juliana Canal, the Wilhelmina and the Beatrix Canal.
