Queen Mathilde Attends Ebola Conference in Brussels

Today, Tuesday March 3, Queen Mathilde participated in a conference about ebola at the Egmont Palace in Brussels.

The title of the conference was “Ebola: from emergency to recovery”, and it took place under the organisation and patronage of the European Union. The conference was also co-chaired by the European Union, the Presidents of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the United Nations, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Among others were present Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, the Presidents of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Europena Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ministers and Representatives of the governments of the E.U., delegates from the U.S., Cuba and other nations involved in the fight against Ebola.

In her opening speech, the Queen praised the work of doctors, nurses and other health workers that were in front line helping and fighting against the disease in the most affected West African countries, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Queen Mathilde said: “Their determination and their dedication to their vocation to help the sick have been crucial in stemming the disease.” She stressed that the goal of the conference is to “ensure that no similar epidemic can ever get out of hand again, as this one did.”

The purpose of the conference is to sustain the international mobilisation and to plan the next steps in the fight both against the current outbreak and the Ebola virus in general.

Queen Mathilde held the speech partly in English and partly in French.
