King Willem-Alexander Pays Visit to Dutch Troops in Mali

King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands has paid a visit to the Dutch troops currently stationed in Mali, the Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst (RVD) confirmed late yesterday afternoon.

He arrived in the country on Wednesday, and visited Camp Castor in Gao, which is the base of the 450 Dutch troops in the West African nation. The troops are part of the United Nation’s Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission (Minusma) that “supports political processes in Mali and carries out a number of security-related tasks”.

Accompanied by Land Forces Commander Lieutenant General Mart de Kruif, the King was given briefings on the work the troops are undertaking. The King also spoke personally with some of the troops.

Before departing for home yesterday, the King had a short meeting with the President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, in the capital Bamako. He also visited the Minusma headquarters.
