King Willem-Alexander & Queen Máxima in Groningen & Drenthe

On Tuesday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

The Royal Couple began their visit in Veendam, a town in Groningen. The King and Queen were received in the Veenkoloniaal Museum by the Commissioner of the King in Groningen, Mr Max van den Berg, and the Mayor of Veendam, Mr Sipke Swierstra. They visited the exhibition on the history of the Veenkoloniaal area.

Then King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima went to the vanBeresteyn Cultural Center where they met researchers and young farmers from the region and the employees of AVEBE, an innovating company producing solutions based on potato starch for food, paper, building, textiles, adhesives and feed industries.

The King and the Queen continued their visit in Stadskanaal. They were received by the Mayor of Stadskanaal, Mrs Baukje Galama, at the Sheltered Company Wedeka. The company’s mission is to reduce the distance to the labor market for different groups of people. Wedeka Companies operates in different fields such as recycling and the environment. The Royal Couple talked with employees and visited the part of the company that is focused on packaging activities for companies.

Later, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima moved to the province of Drenthe. In Emmer-Compascuum, a village in the municipality of Emmen, they were received by the Commissioner of the King in Drenthe, Mr Jacques Tichelaar, and the Mayor of Emmen, Mr Cees Bijl, in the Multifunctional Centre (MFC) The Deele.

The last event of the visit was at the Stenden University, one of the themes of the visit was “Primary School Master Polymer Engineering”, the Royal Couple spoke with young students about activities that stimulate interest in technology.
