Denmark’s Crown Prince Attends Shooting Vigil
Joining tens of thousands of fellow Danes, Crown Prince Frederik tonight participated in a candlelit vigil to honour the two victims of the weekend’s Copenhagen shootings.
The memorial took place in a packed Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads, near the Fælledparken in Østerbro. Songs, including John Lennon’s Imagine and Danish tune Man binder os på mund og hånd (which translates to ‘They tie our mouths and hands’) that was written in resistance to the Nazi occupation during the Second World War, were sung by performers and the crowd.
Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt was also present, walking with Crown Prince Frederik and delivering a short speech to the massive crowd, which is estimated to have been between 30,000 and 40,000.
Film director Finn Nørgaard and Dan Uzan, a Jewish basketballer guarding a bat mitzvah celebration, were shot dead at two locations on Saturday, when Omar El-Hussein attacked a free speech meeting and a synagogue. Five police officers were also injured.
Earlier in the day, the Crown Prince visited the Copenhagen Police Headquarters to thank the police for their efforts during the attack.
Prince Henrik, who was overseas over the weekend, stopped in Paris on his way home, visiting the Danish Embassy where he viewed the flowers left outside with the Danish Ambassador to France.
