Crown Princess Mary of Denmark touched down in Ethiopia this morning, for a three-day visit focusing on women’s health and rights in humanitarian emergencies.

Joined by the Danish Minister for Trade and Development, Mogens Jensen, she was welcomed by Ethiopian Airlines officials at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The Princess was presented with a cake and champagne during a brief welcoming reception.

It was then on to the Tierkidi refugee camp in Gambella, near the Ethiopian border with South Sudan in the west of the country. Here, Mary and the Minister opened a youth centre to provide refugee children with an education facility, where they were greeted with music and dance performances. They visited water collection and grain mill stations, speaking with refugees about their situations.

The Crown Princess also participated in a young women’s forum discussion, and distributed hygiene kits to women at the camp, which is home to almost 50,000 refugees from South Sudan.
