Charles and Camilla Attend Holocaust Memorial Day Ceremony

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have attended an event in London to commemorate the day.

Together with Prime Minister David Cameron and the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband, the couple spoke with survivors of the Holocaust and listened to stories of victims during the national commemoration at the Methodist Central Hall.

Prince Charles delivered a speech during the event, stating that “the Holocaust is not just a Jewish tragedy, nor merely a dark page from the Second World War, but a warning and a lesson to all of us of all faiths in all times.” The Prince spoke of how the events of the Holocaust were relevant to today’s society, particularly the “dreadful events in the Middle East.”

He ended his speech by reciting three sentences scratched into a wall at Auschwitz by a Holocaust victim: “I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I don’t feel it. I believe in God even when He is silent.”

January 27, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
