Princess Laurentien Attends National Reading Days Event

On January 21, Princess Laurentien attended a National Reading Breakfast Days event as part of the 12th edition of the National Reading Days in Hoorn.

The event took place in the National Library where the Princess read a book to a group of children from grade 8. The book chosen for the reading was “Farmer Boris goes to sea”, written by Ted van Lieshout and illustrated by Philip Hopman. The book was elected Picture Book of the Year 2015 by a jury of Dutch children’s librarians. During the reading, Princess Laurentien stressed the importance of reading aloud because it helps in language development.

The National Reading Days is an initiative of the Reading Foundation and organized by the Foundation for Collective Promotion of the Dutch Book (CPNB). It started on January 21 and will last until January 31. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage reading to children who do not yet read.
The Reading & Writing Foundation is an initiative of Princess Laurentien and it was launched on May 27, 2004. Since January 1st 2014, the Princess is honorary chairman of the Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to prevent and reduce illiteracy in the Netherlands and internationally.
On 24 March 2009, Princess Laurentien appointed as UNESCO Special Envoy for Literacy.
