Saudi King Abdullah Passes Away

The Royal Saudi Court announced earlier this morning the death of His Majesty King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

The late monarch, who was 90 years old, passed away this morning at 1:00am local time (10:00pm GMT) after a long battle of illnesses. He was addmitted to hospital weeks ago for medical checks after suffering from a lung infection as mentioned in a statement from the royal court.

King Abdullah was the tenth male son of the late King AbdulAziz Al Saud, the founder of Saudi Arabia. He became King in 2005 upon the death of his brother, the late King Fahed bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud. According to the Royal Court, he will be buried later today in a simple ceremony as per Saudi tradition.
The King will be succeeded by his younger brother, Crown Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, who will be styled as King Salman al Saud of Saudi Arabia and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques . The deputy Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz will succeed King Salman as the new Crown Prince.
