Jordan’s Prince Ali to Run for FIFA Presidency

Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan announced today his intentions to stand for the FIFA Presidency in elections to be held in May against the association’s long-serving leader Sepp Blatter.

The 39-year-old Prince released a statement through his official Facebook saying, “This was not an easy decision, it came after careful consideration and many discussions with respected FIFA colleagues over the last few months.” He added, “The message I heard, over and over, was that it is time for a change.”

In addition to his current position as the Vice President of FIFA for Asia, Prince Ali is also the head of both the Jordanian and West Asian Football Federations.

Prince Ali is the third son of the late King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan and Queen Alia Al Hussein. He attended Sandhurst Military Academy in the UK and is currently serving in the Jordanian Armed Forces. In 2004, the Prince married Algerian-born Rym Brahimi, a former CNN journalist, who is the daughter of the UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. The couple are living in the Jordanian capital Amman with their two children, Prince Abdullah and Princess Jalilah.
