The Danish New Years Courts have begun in Copenhagen, with a glittering gala held at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg this evening.

Hosted by Queen Margrethe II, the banquet was attended by Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, and the Queen’s first cousin Princess Elisabeth. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt was also present, as were members of the government, parliament, defence leaders and the royal household staff.

Guests feasted on a meal of fish, beef tenderloin with salsify and potatoes, mushroom pie and Paris Brest with oranges for dessert. Rosenborg Wine, which dates back to the sixteenth century, was served as per tradition at the first New Years Court. According to the Royal Court, the wine – first served by Christian IV – is expected to last for another 300 Courts.

Queen Margrethe recycled a dark green lace evening gown, with the Danish Emerald Parure. Crown Princess Mary wore a new white evening gown with three-quarter length sleeves and a gold waistband, paired with her diamond and ruby parure. Princess Marie also recycled, wearing the blush pink gown she wore to Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s wedding in 2013. She topped her look off with her diamond floral tiara.

In the coming days, the Regent and Crown Princely Couples will attend three more Courts for various people within Danish society.
