Dutch Royal Family Presents Prince Claus Award 2014

Earlier this week, on December 10, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima along with Prince Beatrix, Prince Constantijn, Princess Laurentien and Princess Mabel attended the ceremony of the Prince Claus Award at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

This year the award went to Colombian artist and plant expert Abel Rodríguez. Prince Constantijn, as honorary chair of the Prince Claus Fund, presented the award.

Mr. Rodriguez received this award for “his knowledge as a plant expert, his outstanding artworks and his contribution to the understanding of the Amazonian ecosystem.” With paintings and drawings, he represents the Amazonian ecosystem.

Abel Rodriguez collaborates since 1980 with Tropenbos International, a non-governmental organisation based in the Netherlands. It was created in 1986 as a Dutch response to increasing concerns about the disappearance and degradation of tropical rain forests worldwide.

From December 11 to March 15, the Prince Claus Fund Gallery will exhibit a selection of works by Abel Rodriguez, “Mogaje Guiju – Abel Rodríguez: El nombrador de plants.”

The Prince Claus Awards are presented by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development since 1997 annually to artists, thinkers and cultural organizations, particularly in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Prince Claus Fund was established on 6 September 1996 as a tribute to Prince Claus’s dedication to culture and development.
