2014 Nobel Prize Ceremony in Sweden
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden tonight presented the Nobel Prize awards in a glittering ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall.
The 2014 laureates were for physics Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, for chemistry Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner, for physiology/medicine John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser, for literature Patrick Modiano, and for economic sciences Jean Tirole.
Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel joined the King in their stage seats for the ceremony; while Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine sat in the front row of the main audience for the first time, joined by Sofia Hellqvist and Christopher O’Neill, who both made their Nobel debuts.
Following the ceremony, 1300 guests moved into the Blue Hall for the official Nobel banquet. The dinner menu consisted of cauliflower soup with King crab and peas, spicy deer sirloin with an assortment of vegetables, and mousse and sorbet for dessert.
The royal ladies were an explosion of colour for the gala: Queen Silvia wore a turquoise long-sleeved gown in duchess satin with sequin and pearl embroidery. This was paired with the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure. Crown Princess Victoria went the red route, in a voluminous strapless ball gown by Pär Engsheden, with the Baden Fringe Tiara and a large diamond cross necklace.
Princess Madeleine and Sofia Hellqvist both chose colours in the purple region of the colour wheel – Madeleine wore a dress of silk organza and tulle, with a light rose base and embroidered beading in burgundy and taupe from Fadi El Khoury. The Princess wore the Modern Fringe Tiara and pieces from the amethyst collection. Sofia’s Ida Sjöstedt gown was fuchsia and deep purple, with a tulle skirt overlay and sequins in the pattern of flowers around the bodice.
Tomorrow night, King Carl Gustaf will host a banquet at the Royal Palace for the laureates.
