Sweden’s Queen Silvia was last night presented with the ‘Ehrenherz’ (Honorary Heart) at the Ein Herz für Kinder awards gala in Berlin.

Held in a hangar at Berlin’s old Tempelhof Airport, Queen Silvia received the award for her lifelong commitment and work to help children in need. The Queen is patron of over 60 organisations, and founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999.

Queen Silvia, who received the charity’s ‘Goldene Herz’ (Golden Heart) in 2003, is the first recipient of the Honorary Heart. Manuela Schwesig, the German Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, praised the Queen’s work and called her “a Queen of all children” before she presented her the award.

The awards, which are the main fundraising event of the Ein Herz für Kinder (A Heart for Children) charity, are a television fundraiser held annually, with all donations going towards the assistance of children in need. This year’s gala raised almost €16.3million.
