Thai Royal In-Laws Stripped Of Royally-Bestowed Name
The Crown Prince of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, has officially stripped his wife’s family of the royally-bestowed name that he gave them upon their marriage.
Princess Srirasmi’s family members have been using the surname Akharaphongpreecha, but have been ordered to revert “back to their old family name”, an official statement from the Thai court said.
The move comes after seven of the Princess’ close relatives, including four siblings and an uncle, were arrested in the past two weeks for their part in a police corruption ring that saw 17 arrested on charges including extortion for promotions, receiving bribes from underground casino owners and lèse majesté (offences against the Royal Family).
BBC reports that this is the Crown Prince’s first step in seeking a divorce from Princess Srirasmi, who is his third wife.
