Crown Princess Mary Unveils 2014 Christmas Seal

As patron of the Julemærkefonden, Crown Princess Mary today unveiled the foundation’s Christmas Seal for the coming holiday season at the Copenhagen Town Hall.

The 2014 edition of the seal (or stamp) was designed by Jacob Kühnel, and shows a number of Christmas-related drawings which come together to create a one large image. Mr Kühnel said that it was a “great pleasure” to design this year’s seals.

Princess Mary, wearing a navy blue blouse with striped detailing and a matching skirt, was presented with a bouquet of flowers from a 12-year-old named Josephine who has been a resident at one of the foundation’s homes.

Money raised by the stamps will go towards the Christmas Seal Foundation’s homes for children, as per a tradition started in 1910. 750 children a year spend time at the homes run by the foundation, where they learn about healthy diets (most of the residents are overweight), and get help to improve their self-esteem. In 2013, sales of the Christmas Seal raised 21,019,000DKK (2,823,000€).

The first seal, showing a likeness of the late Queen Louise, consort of Christian IX, was released in 1904.
