King Felipe & Queen Letizia Visit Boal, Prince of Asturias Award Winner
King Felipe and Queen Letizia yesterday paid a visit to the town of Boal, in Asturias’s west, which was named this year’s Exemplary Town of Asturias.
The King and Queen were shown around the town by its Mayor, Jose Antonio Barrientos, and other officials, visiting a laundry centre, a primary school and the House of Beekeeping.
During the official portion of the visit – where the town was officially declared the Exemplary Town and a plaque was unveiled at the Plaza del Emigrante de Boal – King Felipe said that the town has reason to be proud of their way of living which is “based on honesty, continuous treatment, affection, honor their word and solidarity, while the respect for nature and living in harmony with it.”
The Exemplary Town of Asturias award is given to a town or village which has excelled in protecting and conserving its “natural environment, environmental, historical, cultural or artistic heritage, or in performing community works of outstanding solidarity.”
On Friday, the pair – accompanied by Queen Sofia – attended the awards ceremony for the Prince of Asturias Awards at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo. King Felipe presented the awards, which are awarded in the categories of arts, social sciences, communication and humanities, scientific and technical research, literature, international cooperation, sports and Concordia. From next year, the Prince of Asturias Foundation has announced the awards will be known as the Princess of Asturias Awards, as the current heir is the King’s daughter, Leonor.
