The Queen of the Belgians was this evening present at the closing ceremony of an inter-religious conference that has been taking place in Antwerp.

‘Peace Is The Future: Religions and Cultures in Dialogue 100 Years After World War One’ was organised by the Community of Sant’Egidio to bring together the different religions of the world to pray for continued peace and to enter into dialogues to assist religions work together to not be dragged into regional conflicts.

Queen Mathilde was joined by the Vice President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the Governor of Antwerp, Cathy Berx, for the ceremony, which took place on Grote Markt.

At the end of the ceremony – which saw over 350 representatives of the world’s religions present – children representing the next generation were presented with the Comprehensive Peace Appeal, a document which encourages the use of dialogue and prayer to stop future violence and conflict.

The children then met with the Queen, who shook all of their hands and spoke briefly to them.
