Festivities in Maastricht to Mark 200th Anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
The heads of state of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany gathered in Maastricht yesterday to mark the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, and President Joachim Gauck and his partner Daniela Schadt for the celebrations, entitled ‘Hello World!’, in Maastricht, which included a fashion show, concert and an international conference. The party also visited the Vrijthof square, where they mingled through the annual culture festival, Preuvenemint.
Queen Máxima repeated her blue jewelled dress from Koningsdag in April, while Queen Mathilde went for neutral champagne and the Grand Duchess chose a mint green skirt suit.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed and recognised as an official state between 1813 and 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Kingdom was made up of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Celebrations began last September, and will continue until next year, culminating in an event in Amsterdam.
