Royals Commemorate the Start of WWI

On August 4, a ceremony to commemorate the start of the First World War was held at St. Symphorien, near Mons in Belgium.

The event was attended by the King and Queen of the Belgians, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the King of Spain, the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, as well as the Presidents of France and Germany. During the event, King Philippe, Prince William, President Hollande and President Gauck gave speeches.

On the same day, Queen Elizabeth II attended a service at Crathie Kirk in Scotland, while the Duke of Edinburgh was present at one in Sandringham in England. The Prince of Wales attended the service of commemoration for the Commonwealth in Glasgow. The Duchess of Cornwall also attended a candlelit vigil at Westminster Abbey that evening, whilst Prince Harry attended an event in Folkenstone, before joining the Duchess of Cambridge in Mons, where he read out a letter written by an Irish soldier during the War.

The next day, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry visited a field of 888,246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London. A day before, England turned out their lights at 11:00pm to remember those who had lost their lives during WWI.
