Rachel Trevor Morgan: Royal Milliner

Rachel Trevor Morgan was appointed as one of the Queen’s milliners in 2006 and has gone on to create hats worn at many key occasions. Morgan learnt her trade with two of the top milliners in London, Graham Smith and Philip Somerville, both of whom coincidently have designed hats for British royals, most notably the Queen and the late Princess of Wales. She works closely alongside a number of British designers including Stewart Parvin who has been creating outfits for the Queen since 2001. Rachel’s work is known for her careful personal attention to detail in each hat or headpiece thus creating a glamorous and feminine effect. In recent years the Queen’s wardrobe has undergone a remarkable transition helped by the introduction of young designers like Parvin and Morgan giving Her Majesty and much more youthful and feminine look. Other members of the family have also hat pieces designed by Rachel including the Countess of Wessex and Princess Alexandra.

Ascot is the greatest showcase for any milliner and since 2006 the Queen has worn many of Rachel’s hats at the weeklong meeting. One of the Queen’s first hats by Rachel Trevor Morgan was a striking lime-green with silk peonies on the wide brim which was worn with a Stewart Parvin matching coat and dress. This creation was first seen at Ascot on Ladies Day (image1 22nd June 2006) and then later worn to visit the NASA space station on the US visit the following year (image2).

Royal tours are also great millinery occasions and the visit to the US in May 2007 by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received much media attention. For her visit to the White House (now famous for President Bush’s gaffe) the Queen wore an unusal black and white outfit with hat designed by Morgan. (image12) This outfit demonstrates the close relationship between the designer and milliner as many of the trimmings feature on the jacket as well as the brim of the hat. The visit to Uganda in November 2007 was another opportunity for the Queen to wear some of Rachel’s hats image13 , image14.

Recent special milestones celebrated by the Queen were marked with National Thanksgiving services and Rachel was asked to design the hats for these ocasions. The first was in June 2006 at the service in St Paul’s Cathedral to mark the Queen’s 80th and Prince Philip’s 85th birthdays image18 , image19. In November 2007 the Queen and Prince Philip celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a service at Westminster Abbey. The Queen wore a Morgan hat to match the white and silver wool coat by her in house design team of Kelly and Podrum image20 , image21.
