State Visit From Mexico to Spain
The President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, accompanied by his wife, Angélica Rivera, began a state visit to the Kingdom of Spain on Monday June 9th.
The King and Queen presided over the official welcoming ceremony at the El Pardo Palace in Madrid. Following this, the President and First Lady travelled the short distance to the Zarzuela Palace, where the King and Queen hosted a luncheon. They were joined by the Prince and Princess of Asturias.
Later that evening the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Asturias attended the Gala Banquet at the Palacio Real in honour of the state visit. Queen Sofia wore the diamond Fleur de Lys tiara ,whilst the Princess of Asturias wore the Diamond Floral tiara.
During the gala dinner, King Juan Carlos spoke of strong links between Spain and Latin America. This state visit, which is the first since 2011, will also be the last state visit to be presided over by King Juan Carlos.
