Princess Astrid of Belgium Turns 52

Princess Astrid of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este celebrates her 52nd birthday on June 5th.

The Princess is the only sister of King Philippe of Belgium and was born in 1962, the second child and only daughter of the future King Albert II and Queen Paola. The Princess was named in honour of her father’s mother, the tragic Astrid of Sweden, who was killed in 1935. The Princess was baptised Astrid Josephine Charlotte Fabrizia Elisabeth Paola Marie; her god mother was Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg and her godfather Prince Fabrizio Ruffo di Calabria.

In September 1984, Princess Astrid married Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este, and the couple now have five children. Currently Princess Astrid is fifth in the line of succession to the Belgian throne.

A popular member of the Belgian Royal Family, Astrid served as President of the Belgian Red Cross until 2007. The Princess also carries out official duties on behalf of her brother, King Philippe.
