“Road To The Crown” Exhibition Opens at Marienburg

The heirs of Hanover yesterday officially opened The Road To The Crown – The Kingdom of Hanover and Its Rulers exhibition celebrating the history of the Hanoverian Kingdom.

Prince Ernst August Jr and Prince Christian, sons of Prince Ernst August V, welcomed 250 guests to Schloss Marienburg in Pattensen for the opening. Among the guests were Prince Heinrich of Hanover, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Gloria, Princess of Thurn and Taxis and the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. Stephan Weil, the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, was also present.

The exhibition features 70 pieces which illustrate Hanover’s history. The royal crown and sceptre are amongst these, displayed for the first time since the Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866.

Another piece amongst the portraits and antiques is a document of consent signed by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, giving permission for Crown Prince George of Hanover (later George V) to marry Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg in 1843 (as was required at the time for the Prince to retain his succession rights to the British throne).

2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the union between Hanover and Great Britain, when George, Electoral Prince of Hanover succeeded to the British throne as George I. This year also marks the 200th anniversary of the elevation of the electorate to the Kingdom of Hanover.

More celebrations will be held throughout the summer to mark these anniversaries.

The Road To The Crown – The Kingdom of Hanover and Its Rulers will run at Schloss Marienburg until November 9.
