King Carl Gustaf Celebrates 68th Birthday
As per tradition, the Swedish King today celebrated his 68th birthday with a public celebration in the courtyard of the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
Joined by his son, Prince Carl Philip, King Carl XVI Gustaf was treated to a music program performed by the Army and Navy military bands in the Guard Wing, before heading to the outer courtyard where members of the public gathered to greet him. The King received a salute, before accepting flowers from school children.
Other members of the King’s family – Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle – watched the festivities from a balcony above the courtyard. Princess Estelle gleefully waved to the crowds and attempted to pull the crowns off the bunting hung over the balcony railing. They were joined by the King and Prince Carl Philip at the conclusion of the official celebrations.
The King was born in 1946, the youngest child and only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He succeeded his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf, in 1973.
