Queen Elizabeth Presents Maundy Money

The Queen today was in Blackburn to mark this year’s Royal Maundy Service. She was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Standing out from the crowd in a bright pink double-breasted cashmere coat with a matching dress by Stewart Parvin, the service took place at Blackburn Cathedral where Queen Elizabeth was presented with a nosegay of yellow, purple and white flowers.

Following the service, Queen Elizabeth continued with a centuries-old tradition: presenting two purses of money to people in the local community. Each year, the same number of men and women as the Queen’s age (this year 88) receive the gift. The purses this year contain 88p worth of specially minted coins, and two commemorative coins, one to mark the 300th anniversary of Queen Anne’s reign, and one to mark the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this coming summer.

Before they returned to London, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a reception at Blackburn Rovers Football Club where they met with local dignitaries.
