The EFC Princess Margriet Awards 2014

On Tuesday March 18, Princess Margriet and Princess Laurentien attended the ECF Princess Margriet Awards 2014 at the Bozar Center for Fine Arts in Brussels.

The laureates of the sixth edition of the award were “Teatro Valle Occupato” from Rome and Teodor Celakoski from Zagreb. The Teatro Valle, Italy’s oldest theatre, was saved in 2011 from an uncertain future with the occupation of a group of theatre workers who has led to the creation of the “Fondazione Teatro Valle Bene Comune”: a innovative
institution involving citizens and artists in the management and the care of the theatre.
Teodor Celakoski is a cultural worker and activist.

As President of the EFC, Princess Laurentien held a speech and Princess Margriet awarded the prizes. In her speech, the Princess stressed the importance to have public gathering spaces “to exchange experiences and develop shared narratives.” About the laureates she said: “In Rome, Teatro Valle Occupato and Zagreb, Teodor Celakoski employ culture as a radical project of learning, posing deep questions about what it means to create a space where people can openly entertain views other than their own, and in so doing, allow new and fresh perspectives.”

Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, was present at the awards.

The European Cultural Foundation was set up in Geneva in 1954. Princess Laurentien is currently the President of ECF and Extraordinary Member of the Board since 2007, when she succeeded Princess Margriet. The EFC Princess Margriet Award was established in 2008 in honour of the organisation’s former President, Princess Margriet, in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
