Death of the Dowager Countess of Ripalda

It was announced earlier this evening that the Dowager Countess of Ripalda died at the Hospital La Paz in Madrid where she was admitted following a stroke. The Countess, better known as María de la Concepción Sáenz de Tejada y Fernández de Bobadilla, is the mother of Don Jaime de Marichalar, former husband of Infanta Elena of Spain, Duchess of Lugo.

The Dowager Countess was born in Logroño in the La Roja region in January 1929. In July 1957, she married the Spanish noble Don Amalio de Marichalar, 8th Count of Ripalda. The couple had six children, including the present Count, Don Amalio Marichalar Joaquin Saenz de Tejada who was born in 1958. The Countess was widowed in December 1978.

In 1995, her third son, Don Jaime, married Infanta Elena, the eldest daughter of King Juan Carlos I, sadly the marriage ended in divorce in 2009. The Dowager Countess was godmother to Jaime and Elena’s son, Don Felipe Juan Froilan de Marichalar y Borbon.

It is expected that the funeral arrangements for the late Countess will be announced in the coming days.
