Belgian Introductory Visit to Italy
On Wednesday February 19th, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde paid an introductory visit to Italy.
The Royal Couple arrived in Rome in the late morning, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo, and the Foreign Minister, Didier Reynders. At Quirinale, the Presidential Palace, the King and the Queen were welcomed with military honors then they were greeted by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. After posing for photos, took place an audience. The Italian Foreign Minister, Emma Bonino, was present too. President Napolitano offered a lunch for the Royal Couple.
Then King Philippe and Queen Mathilde met the resigned Italian Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, at the Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the Government. The Royal Couple were greeted in the courtyard of the Palace by Prime Minister Letta. The King and the resigned Prime Minister inspected the guard of honour.
At 16:00, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde met the President of the Italian Senate, Piero Grasso. The King and the Queen were welcomed by the President and his wife Maria Fedele at Palazzo Giustiniani in the “Hall of Mirrors”. After a meeting held in the “Red Hall”, the President Grasso showed to the Royal Couple the Italian Constitution, a document from 1947, in the “Constitutional Hall”.
