The Queen of the Belgians celebrated her 41st Birthday on January 20th.

Queen Mathilde d’Udekem d’Acoz was born in Uccle on the 20th of January 1973. Her late father, Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz was a member of the untitled Belgian nobility and her mother is Polish Countess Anna Maria Komorowska. Mathilde is the eldest child of four siblings. Sadly, her sister Marie-Alix was killed in a car accident in 1997 which also killed her maternal grandmother.

In December 1999, Mathilde married Prince Philippe of Belgium, Duke of Brabant. The couple first met in 1996. Prior to the wedding King Albert II elevated her father and her two paternal uncles to the rank of Belgian Counts. Mathilde and Philippe have four beautiful children: Princess Elisabeth born in 2001, Prince Gabriel in 2003, Prince Emmanuel in 2005 and Princess Eléonore in 2008.

Mathilde is also godmother to Princess Alexia of the Netherlands and Princess Isabella of Denmark. In September 2008 her father Patrick Count d’Udekem d’Acoz died following a long illness.

Since the July 2013 abdication of her father-in-law, Mathilde has been styled Her Majesty The Queen of the Belgians and is the first Belgian-born Queen consort in the Kingdom’s history. The royal couple have had a hectic schedule touring various parts of the kingdom and visiting neighbouring countries.
