Swedish Royals Attend 2013 Nobel Prize Awards
On December 10, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Christina attended the Nobel Prize Awards. Also present were Countess Bettina Bernadotte and her husband Philipp Haugg.
The Nobels are in memory of the Prizes’ founder, Alfred Nobel, and are a tradition for the Swedish Royal Family since 1901. Usually, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine attend the ceremony, but due to other reasons were not present this year (Victoria attended the funeral of Nelson Mandela whilst Madeleine declined because of her pregnancy).
The laureates for this year were François Englert and Peter W. Higgs (Physics); Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel (Chemistry); James E. Rothman and Thomas C. Sudhof (Medicine); Alice Munro (Literature); and Eugene F. Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert J. Shiller (Economic Sciences). Alice Munro, the laureate for Literature, wasn’t present, so her daughter Jenny received the prize instead.
The events began at the Stockholm Concert Hall; and the male royals wore the Royal Order of the Seraphim, whilst Queen Silvia wore a red dress and the diamond nine-prong tiara. Princess Christina wore the Six Button Tiara.
