Official Visit to the Dutch Caribbean – St Eustatius

On Friday November 15th, third day of their Caribbean tour, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima visited St Eustatius.

The King and the Queen arrived on the island in the morning at the F.D. Roosevelt Airport, where they were welcomed by Island Governor Gerald Berkel, his wife Camelia and members of the Executive and Island Councils. After a brief welcoming ceremony, the Royal Couple went to science fair in which participated all the schools of the island.

Then the King and the Queen visited Buzzy Bees, a daycare center that was opened in 1999 by the then Queen Beatrix. After the lunch with Governor Berkel, members of the Executive Council and other guests, the Royal Couple visited the Hazels Plantation and the Prins van Oranje Plantation, named after the visit made in 1987 by the then Prince Willem-Alexander.

Then the King and the Queen went to the Historical Foundation Museum of St. Eustatius where was opened the exhibition “Days of Slavery in St. Eustatius” to mark the 150 years anniversary of abolition of slavery. The visit in St Eustatius ended with a cultural event at the Wilhelmina Park.
