Historic State Visit to the UK from the Republic of Ireland
It was announced earlier this morning that the President of Ireland and his wife will embark on a three-day historic state visit to the United Kingdom next year.
Áras an Uachtaráin (the House of the President) issued a statement to announce that President Higgins has accepted the invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to visit the country. This will be the first ever state visit by an Irish Head of State to the United Kingdom, and will take place from April 8-10, 2014.
The visit comes almost two years after the highly successful state visit to Ireland by Queen Elizabeth in 2011. The President and Queen Elizabeth did meet during a visit on June 27, 2012 in Belfast.
