The Duke of Kent Celebrates 78th Birthday

 Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent celebrates his 78th birthday on October 9th.

The Duke, who is a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, was born in London in 1935. His parents were Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. Prince Edward has a younger sister, Princess Alexandra, and a younger brother, Prince Michael. In August 1942, his father Prince George was killed in a plane crash in Scotland and Prince Edward succeeded him to the Dukedom of Kent.

On June 8th, 1961 the Duke married Katharine Worsley at York Minster Cathedral; the couple have three children – George, Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Taylor and Lord Nicholas Windsor.

Currently the Duke of Kent is 32nd in the line of succession to the British throne.

In March of this year, the Duke was hospitalized following a mild stroke but has since resumed his royal and public duties. The Duke is possibly best known from his long association with the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
