Albert & Paola in Waregem
This morning, 31 March, King Albert II and Queen Paola of Belgium visited thecity of Waregem. They started the visit at the city hall, signing the obligatory documents, and then went around the market to greet the people gathered there. The sunny weather had persuaded many people to come out to see the monarchs. Around 11 o’clock the King visited Thermote & Vanhalst, a company for forklift trucks, aerial platforms and industrial in-plant vehicles, while Queen Paola visited the Bloso Sports centre. Then the couple attended a reception held in their honour.
They were not the only Belgian royals to come into action today. Prince Laurent saw off a 44 tonne lorry, stowed with toys which have been collected in schools all over the country. The lorry will drive from Brussels to Cairo, to commemorate Sister Emmanuelle, who died last October, and who spent 20 years of her life in the slums of Cairo after her retirement.
