New Patronages for Catherine and Beatrice

The Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Beatrice of York have taken on new patronages this week.

The Duchess of Cambridge has become Patron of three charities and organisations: Place2Be, SportsAid and the Natural History Museum. Place2Be, a Royal Patronage, is a charity which provides mental and emotional support for children aged 4 to 14 through a system of 175 schools throughout the United Kingdom.

SportsAid provides grants to young able and disabled athletes to assist them in funding their careers. Many of last year’s British Olympians, including Sir Chris Hoy, Jessica Enis and Mo Farah, have been recipients of SportsAid awards during their youth. The Natural History Museum in London is both a museum and a science research centre. According to their website, the Museum’s mission is to “maintain and develop our collections, and use them to promote the discovery, understanding, responsible use and enjoyment of the natural world.” The late Diana, Princess of Wales was the previous patron of the Museum.

Princess Beatrice has become the Royal Patron of the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in Surrey. The centre assists individuals who both have dyslexia (a learning disability which impacts on an individual’s ability to read in a fluent and comprehensive manner) and who wish to learn more about dyslexia so they in turn can help others.

The Princess, now twenty-four, attended the centre from the age of seven, when she herself was diagnosed with dyslexia. She says she has “benefited hugely from their work” and is “looking forward to supporting them in giving a chance to others to benefit from their experience and teaching.”
