The Princess of Asturias Turns 40

Her Royal Highness Doña Letizia, Princess of Asturias celebrated her 40th Birthday yesterday. The future Queen Consort of Spain was born on September 15th, 1972 in Oviedo, Asturias.

Prior to her marriage to Prince Felipe in 2004, Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano worked as a journalist. The news of her engagement to the Prince was announced in November 2003 and caught many royal watchers by complete surprise. The couple married on May 22nd, 2004 at the Cathedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid in a lavish ceremony. This royal wedding was also the first one in Madrid in over a century.

The Princess gave birth to her first child, Infanta Leonor, in October 2005 and another daughter, Infanta Sofia, followed in April 2007.

To mark this very special milestone, the Palace released a series of new photographs of the Asturias family.
