15 Years Since the Death of Diana, Princess of Wales
Today marks the 15th anniversary since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. She was only 36-years-old when she fatally injured in a tragic car accident in Paris, on August 31, 1997.
Born on 1 July 1961 to one of Britain’s most illustrious and oldest noble families, the Spencers, the shy 19-year-old was catapulted to the world stage when her engagement to Prince Charles was announced in 1981. The couple’s beautiful wedding was watched by a worldwide audience of over 750 million: in an instant, Diana became and a global icon.
The couple’s first son, Prince William, was born within a year of marriage. Two years later, they welcomed their second son, Prince Harry. Unfortunately, by 1992 the marriage was in crisis and on December 9, the Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation. Their highly publicised divorce was finalised in August of 1996.
Diana continued her charity work and drew attention to many worthwhile causes such as landmines and AIDS; unfortunately, just a year later, in August of 1997, she died in a car crash in Paris, France. The accident also claimed the lives of her companion, Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the car, Henri Paul.
The Princess’ death was mourned all over the world, from her native Britain, to countries she had never been to, including my own (Armenia). There was an outpouring of public grief and emotions unlike anything that had been seen before. Hundreds of thousands lined the streets of London on the day of her funeral, with millions watching the sombre event live.
Diana was one of the world’s most famous and photographed women: she was renowned for her charity work, kindness and unique style. Although gone for 15 years now, Diana’s legacy lives on in her sons and the philanthropic legacy she left.
