Jewel of the Day: The Boucheron Aquamarine Clips

Another event attended by Her Majesty, another jewel – in this case, the marvellous Boucheron Aquamarine Clips, which Queen Elizabeth opted to wear for Paralympics Opening Ceremony.

I happen to be a huge fan of Aquamarine jewellery (and that includes the Queen’s much maligned Brazilian Aquamarine parure, and especially the Aquamarine and Diamond Brooch), so every time the Queen wears these, I’m one very happy jewellery watcher.

These Art Deco brooches were an 18th birthday present to Princess Elizabeth from her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), in 1944. The clip brooches were made of aquamarine and diamonds, and created by Boucheron in a clip style that was very popular in 1940s. Many jewellery watchers believed the brooches were actually made by Cartier (which is why they are often mistakenly called Cartier Aquamarine Clips) because it was their trademark style at the time; however, they were correctly identified as Boucheron ones in Leslie Field’s The Queen’s Jewels.

The Queen loves these clips; she wears them on everyday engagements as well as on the most official, even state ones. For instance, she opted to wear these several times during her historic 2011 visit to Ireland.

The clips can be worn in a variety of ways, including as a single large oval brooch or on either shoulder. Queen Elizabeth is fairly traditional jewellery-wise though, so she mostly wears them one above the other.
