80 years since Olav’s and Märtha’s Wedding
Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha, a Swedish Princess, were married 80 years ago, on March 21st 1929.
Prince Olav and Princess Märtha met during the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928. They took some time to explore the city together and get to know each other. By the time they returned to their respective homes, they were secretly engaged.
The engagement was announced publicly in Stockholm a few months later, on 14 January 1929, and the wedding took place on 21 March of that year in Oslo. They were given the Skaugum estate as a wedding present by its then owner, Fritz Wedel Jarlsberg, and they set up home there. When their son and heir, Crown Prince Harald, married in 1968, they passed the Skaugum estate to him.
Olav and Märtha had three children: Princess Ragnhild (born in 1930), Princess Astrid (born in 1932) and Crown Prince (now King) Harald (born in 1937).
