Crown Prince Haakon’s 39th Birthday
Today, Crown Prince Haakon celebrates his 39th birthday. He was born on July 20th, 1973 and has an elder sister, Princess Märtha Louise. Due to male precedence, he became Crown Prince of Norway when his father ascended to the throne in 1991.
In 1990, the Norwegian constitution was altered, granting the eldest child, regardless of gender, to precede in the line of succession. This was not, however, done retroactively, meaning that Haakon continues to take precedence over his elder sister.
He attended his first Council of State in 1991 after he had turned 18 years, and acted as Regent and presided over the Council of State for the first time in May 1992, while the King was abroad.
On August 25th, 2001 Crown Prince Haakon married Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in Oslo Cathedral. The Crown Prince Couple has two children together, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, born on January 21st, 2004 and Prince Sverre Magnus, born on December 3rd, 2005. Together with them lives Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, who was born on January 13th, 1997.
They live at the country estate of Skaugum, near Oslo, where Crown Prince Haakon spent his childhood years.
