Kate Opens National Portrait Gallery’s Olympic Exhibition

The Duchess of Cambridge visited the exhibition “Road To 2012: Aiming High” at London’s National Portrait Gallery today. The exhibition features images of famous athletes and newcomers all hoping for Olympic glory. Kate met the photographers, as well as some of their sitters. Among them was the London 2012 Olympic torch relay’s oldest bearer, Diana Gould. Mrs Gould, who turned 100 this year, is set to be a torch-bearer in the London Borough of Barnet.

Kate has many reasons to be there: apart from being one of the ambassadors for Team GB and Paralympics GB, she is also Patron of the National Portrait Gallery. Moreover, the Duchess actually features in the exhibition herself, in a photograph taken by Jillian Edlestein at a Team GB hockey event she had attended earlier this year.

The Duchess is a keen photographer herself and, according to royal aides, looked forward to viewing the exhibition “immensely”. Her love for Art is well known too; Kate wrote her History of Art degree dissertation at on the photography of Lewis Carroll.

Kate arrived wearing a blue Stella McCartney dress (appropriately, the designer behind the Team GB Olympic kit), Prada shoes, and a Cartier gold chain necklace with a large hoop, estimated to worth £49,000. The never before seen piece of jewellery is likely to be a present from either Prince Charles, or Prince William.
