It seems everyone is getting into the spirit of the London Olympics, even Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, on the first day of their tour to Channel Islands, went to Grainville Secondary School where they talked to teachers and students and popped into the school gym. That’s when the Prince saw a traversing wall – and immediately decided to climb it.

To the surprise of the onlookers, Prince Charles attempted to climb the wall, a feat all the more impressive due to the fact the Prince was dressed in his usual smart suit and elegant (but definitely not wall-climbing) shoes. The prince clearly enjoyed the experience, as there was a broad grin on his face once he got down.

John McGuinness, Head Teacher of Grainville School, said: “The prince did quite a stretch in his suit and he drew a gasp from everyone including the Duchess. It just showed his willingness to have a go, amongst the young people in the gym they were taken with this and he will have earned some street cred with them.”

The visit to the Channel Islands proves to be a really relaxed one – and all the fun didn’t end on day one. For the second day, the couple visited Saumarez Park in St Peter’s Port, where they joined the delighted locals in some of the group games. They particularly enjoyed the “parachute game”, diving under the silk parachute held aloft by the locals.

The Prince also tried other games available, including spinning plates; unfortunately, balance proved not to be one of his strengths. The Duchess, meanwhile, learned how to perform resuscitation with the St John’s Ambulance.  Later, the royal couple attended an allegiance ceremony in Castle Cornet.
