Eugenie Raises Money For Hospital With Overnight Bike Ride

Princess Eugenie joined 3,000 cyclists to take part in the Nightrider event to raise money for charity. Eugenie finished at 7.50AM at Alexandra Palace; her seven-hour effort helped bring in £9,000. Part of the money will go to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The Princess is Patron of the Redevelopment Appeal of the Hospital: the accommodation unit at the hospital will be named Princess Eugenie House.

The Hospital is of special importance for the young royal; she underwent a surgery there when she was 12, to correct scoliosis – a condition which causes curvature of the spine. She told Sky News of her experience: “I’ve got two 12-inch rods and eight screws going up my back keeping me straight and they fuse together with my spine so now I can’t live without them.”However, she also spoke of lighter moments about her condition: “It is sometimes quite fun because my friends can put magnets on my back and they kind of hang off. It’s really weird.”

When Eugenie completed the 63-mile journey, she was greeted with a big hug from her proud mother who had already donated to the cause.

Just days ago, Princess Eugenie gave a very touching interview – the first royal interview since the Diamond Jubilee. She spoke lovingly of her grandparents, and how trying it was for the Queen to attend some of the Jubilee events without Prince Philip (who had been hospitalised with bladder infection). The Princess said of her grandparents: “They are the most incredibly supportive couple to each other. Grandpa was unfortunately taken ill and for granny to come and do that alone was probably quite testing and I think he is her rock, really, and she is his”.
