Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Asturias were in Navarre on June 6th to preside over the Prince of Viana Culture Awards 2012. The royal couple arrived at the Benedictine Monastery of San Salvador of Leyre in northern Navarre, Spain and they were accompanied by the Spanish Minister for Education,The Archbishop of Pamplona and the Abbot of San Salvador of Leyre.

Among the various titles held by Prince Felipe, he is also the current Prince of Viana, which historically was the title bestowed on the heir of the Kingdom of Navarre. The awards, which were set up in 1990, are awarded annually by the Government of Navarre and presented by Felipe, Prince of Asturias, Prince of Girona, Prince of Viana, Duke of Montblanc, Count of Cervera and Lord of Balaguer.

Spanish painter and sculptor Antonio López García was presented with the 2012 Prince of Viana Culture Award by Prince Felipe.

Following the awards ceremony, the Prince and Princess attended a religious ceremony at the Monastery Church to honour the Kings of Navarre, who founded and established the Monastery of San Salvador of Leyre. Prince Felipe later placed a wreath at the tomb of the Kings of Navarre inside this historic church.
