Queen Elizabeth attends Chelsea Flower Show for 48th time

The Queen attended Chelsea Flower show on Monday for 48th time in its history. Her Majesty’s presence is something of a tradition – one that has been spanning more than 60 years now. Upon arrival, Queen Elizabeth was greeted by a round of applause from the hundreds of well-wishers who had gathered to catch a glimpse of her. She enjoyed a walk around, talking to people and having a look at some of the magnificent floral arrangements on display. One of the highlights of this year’s Chelsea Flower Show is a garden created to celebrate the jubilee.

To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, The Royal Horticultural Society presented the Queen with a lovely new brooch in shape of a flower – an iris. It contains over 100 precious stones, including a large yellow diamond in the centre, 15 white diamonds, 20 amethysts, and 30 tourmalines. The brooch was created by Kristijan Eyjolfsson, who said the task had been an honour.

Her Majesty’s appearance caused some excitement as well; while her coat and dress by one of her favourite designers, Stewart Parvin, was elegant and feminine as usual, her choice of headgear was somewhat more curious. Instead of the usual hat, the Queen wore black netting decorated with small black flowers – most probably, for convenience, to keep her hair in place. Though unusual, it is not the first time Her Majesty has chosen a design like that for Chelsea Flower Show; she wore similar headpieces in 2011, 1996, 1993 and 1987.

Apart from the Queen, several other members of the Royal Family attended the Flower Show, including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Princess Alexandra, the Duchess of Gloucester, and the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
