BBC viewers certainly got more than they had bargained for when their weather forecast was read by none other than the Heir to the Throne. Prince Charles appeared surprisingly unflustered as he tried weather forecasting at the end of the lunchtime news bulletin. As a Clarence House spokeswoman joked: “He was taking a tour when he saw the weather board and had a go. I think he did it very well.” No arguing there.

It started as just another official event for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, or the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, as they are known in Scotland. The couple arrived at BBC’s Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow to celebrate its sixtieth year of broadcasting. The visit went ahead as planned – until the Prince saw a weather board. He used the chance to make a couple of impromptu predictions, which included references to royal residences in Scotland. Looking directly into the camera, the Prince said: “The best of the bright and dry weather will of course be in the northern isles and the far north of the mainland. So, a little hazy sunshine for the Castle of Mey in Caithness.” He even managed to crack a joke or two to general delight.

Once her husband had finished, the Duchess of Rothesay also had a go in front of the cameras. The unusual weather forecast has already sparked a Twitter storm with people re-twitting comments about the surprise appearance.

After leaving BBC headquarters, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay were touched to see dozens of well-wishers had gathered outside despite the pouring rain. To express their gratitude, Their Royal Highnesses ignored the rain and had a light-hearted chat to some of them.
