Crown Princess Mette-Marit Cycles to Work

On Tuesday April 24th, Crown Princess Mette-Marit cycled to work, accompanied amongst others by representatives of the “Cycle to Work Campaign”.

The bike ride started at about 8 o’clock in the morning at Skaugum Estate. It was only 2.5 degrees cold and thick fog was hanging over Skaugum. “Does anyone know the way?” asked the Crown Princess with a sly smile when they started.

During a brief stop at Lysaker, the Crown Princess shared her grapes with the other cyclists. She also took the time to greet people they met along the way. After almost two hours the group arrived at the Royal Palace in Oslo and Crown Princess Mette-Marit herself served coffee and buns.

This year’s cycle to work campaign starts on April 25th, and the Crown Princess, who has biked to work several times before, is a keen proponent of the campaign. She said: “I’m doing this to get attention for cycle to work. It is important to use the bike a lot.”

It all started when Crown Princess Mette-Marit challenged Crown Prince Haakon via Twitter: “And I hereby challenge my husband, if you can turn off the Mac, I promise to cycle to work once every two weeks.” The bet was made ​​in relation to Earth Hour, the world’s biggest climate campaign led by WWF.

Crown Prince Haakon wanted to join the cyclists but wasn’t able to as he is attending the celebration of a Jordan free of Mines in Amman, Jordan today.
