King Abdullah II Turns 50
On Monday, His Majesty King Abdullah bin Al Hussein of Jordan celebrated his 50th birthday. Born in Amman on January 30, 1962, King Abdullah is the eldest son of the late King Hussein and his British second wife, Princess Muna.
King Abdullah began his primary education at the Islamic Educational College in Amman, and later attended St. Edmund’s School in Surrey, England. During his secondary education, the King studied at the Eaglebrook School and Deerfield Academy in the US.
King Abdullah joined the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1980, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1981.
King Abdullah married Queen Rania on June 10, 1993 in Amman. They have four children: Prince Hussein (b. June 1994), Princess Iman (b. September 1996), Princess Salma (b. September 2000) and Prince Hashem (b. January 2005).
His Majesty assumed his constitutional powers as King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on February 7, 1999, the day his father, the late King Hussein, passed away.
On Monday, Prince Hashem, the King’s youngest son, also celebrated his seventh birthday. The family celebrated both anniversaries with a private party at Beit Al Urdun.
